Roth Art

I create openings and work within them. I work in a variety of mediums from canvas and paint to steel, wood and rope. My work can stand on the floor, hang on the wall or dangle from the rafters. The materials I choose to work with can change from piece to piece. I often begin a project with, lets say a hand made stretcher and some canvas and perhaps some twine and a box of nails. By the time I am finished I have probably applied the twine for seventeen hours only to cut it all off and begin threading steel wire through it with shards of glass and liquid rubber. I do not fall in love with my original plans, but instead I allow the material to speak to me as I use it. Sometimes it screams to be removed with wreckless abandon and power tools. It is impossible to attach a single concept to my work. Instead of dreaming up an illusory thought process I prefer to allow my sensibilities to drive me to create and then allow the act of creating to give birth to the object. It is the process that determines the finished piece, not necessarily my rigorous planning.
